Description
Long before I ever became a photographer myself, in fact when I was just 10 years old, I remember being fascinated by the images of scientific photographer Lennart Nilsson, which were first published in "Life" magazine in 1965. They were the world's first images of a living human embryo. On some level I'm sure that this sense of wonder never left me.
When I was shooting for my book "Pure", and exploring the subject of pregnancy at a deeper level, I kept remembering those images from so long ago and drew inspiration from them. Of course, the babies in this series are not still in the womb. These images from "Pure" were created in the studio using a fisheye lens. The babies are lying in what can only be described as a sort of "fish bowl", which is lined with soft wool wadding and strands of raw silk. The image has been lit from below in order to create the ethereal effect. There were 2 sets of twins at the shoot. This is Brandon.
